Sydney Garrett, a second-year DMACC Agribusiness student and Mark Pearson FFA Leadership Scholar from Osceola, was recently announced as one of 16 college students selected to participate in the prestigious World Food Prize Foundation George Washington Carver (GWC) Internship program this summer. Garrett was the only community college student among those selected.

Program interns from from Arizona State University, Drake University, Grand View University, Iowa State University, Loyola University - Chicago, Scripps College, the University of Iowa and the University of Northwestern - St. Paul are participating alongside Garrett.

The interns are working on a wide range of projects for the Foundation, including archives, lectures management, event planning, social media, public relations, graphic design, grassroots efforts and youth programming.

"I currently serve as the Hall of Laureates Social Media Intern, where my duties include drafting engaging content across various social media platforms, increasing social media presence and researching articles for relevant information," Garrett said.

Since its founding in 2001, the GWC Internship has impacted hundreds of students and given them the opportunity to learn about not only the operation and impact of an international non-profit organization, but also about the importance of food security.

Garrett said her duties are not directly related to the Norman Borlaug Symposium, but she said the Hall of Laureates is a place to recognize Laureates and Dr. Norman Borlaug, the Cresco, Iowa, native who is credited with saving more than a billion people worldwide from starvation.

“I focus on not only advertising the venue, but also sharing history of the World Food Prize Foundation, highlighting awards and publicizing tours for the public," Garrett said.
