Hernandez Cruz Receives ISGC Incoming Freshman Scholarship for Diversity in STEM

Genesis Hernandez Cruz, a first-year Health Sciences student in Drake University’s College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, received a 2022-23 Incoming Freshman Scholarship from the Iowa Space Grant Consortium (ISGC).

This new scholarship program instituted by the ISGC in the fall of 2022 is meant to attract and retain diverse students in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) disciplines at higher education institutions in Iowa. The scholarship carries a one-time $3,000 award.

Hernandez Cruz is from Des Moines, Iowa, and is planning to complete one of the 3 + 1 nursing programs the CPHS has in partnership with Mercy College of Health Sciences and Allen College.

This will allow Hernandez Cruz to receive two degrees in four years: a Bachelor of Science in Clinical and Medical Sciences from the CPHS and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from either Mercy or Allen College.

“The CPHS is committed to recruiting and retaining diverse cohorts of students to prepare the next generation of healthcare professionals to care for diverse populations in Iowa, nationally, and around the world,” said Renae Chesnut, dean of the college.

“The new Incoming Freshman Scholarship implemented by the ISGC provides another opportunity for Drake students from diverse backgrounds to focus on their education and become well-rounded professionals in an increasingly diverse world.”
