St Anthony Cancer Center recently issued the following announcement.
Deb Adams, ARNP, of St Anthony Regional Hospital was honored with The DAISY Award® For Extraordinary Nurse Leaders at a celebratory holiday gathering that was held on Friday, Dec. 17th with other St. Anthony Nurse Leaders. She received a certificate, Daisy Award pin, daisy bouquet, and a hand carved stone statue sculpture entitled "A Healer's Touch". The award is part of the DAISY Foundation's program to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day.
Adams, a native of Windom, Minn., has served St. Anthony Regional Hospital for a combined total of 28 years. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Morningside College in 1988 and began her career with St. Anthony the same year. Adams started on the medical / surgical floor working in the intensive care unit and worked her way up to director of the dialysis unit. She pursued her Master of Science in Nursing and Nurse Practitioner accreditation at Briar Cliff University in 2008 and graduated in 2011. Adams returned to St. Anthony in 2015 to serve as director of the Chronic Care Center. She earned her wound care certification in 2016 and advises patients as a nurse practitioner in wound care and chronic disease management, including diabetes.
The nominations submitted read in part:
“Deb is very creative in finding solutions to take care of my hip wound. She is always friendly and explains everything to me and brings in other hospital units to help with wound care.”
“My daughter received an accidental gunshot wound in Des Moines in April. (and was being treated there.) I knew my daughter needed the opinion of a wound care specialist. I called Deb and sent her a picture of the wounds. She told me what to expect, how to keep the wounds clean, and how to promote healing. Deb was very reassuring and said I could call anytime. I continued to be in touch with Deb over the course of the next six weeks. Deb was always professional, kind, understanding and helpful. When my daughter came home from college, Deb was more than willing to look at her wounds and to help. For myself and my daughter, Deb was a lifeline. I had the utmost confidence in her advice and guidance and it kept me grounded.”
The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation is based in Glen Ellen, CA, and was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.
Said Bonnie Barnes, FAAN, CEO and Co-Founder of The DAISY Foundation, "When Patrick was critically ill, our family experienced first-hand the remarkable skill and care nurses provide patients every day and night. Yet these unsung heroes are seldom recognized for the super-human work they do. The kind of work the nurses at St. Anthony Hospital are called on to do every day epitomizes the purpose of The DAISY Award.”
“Our honorees strive for compassionate leadership,” said Scott Ellis, Vice President of Patient Services and Chief Nursing Officer at St. Anthony. “It is important to recognize the extraordinary work that the St. Anthony nurse leadership performs in every area. The Daisy Award also recognizes and honors the exceptional care our RNs, LPNs, CRNAs, and ARNPs provide.”
