St Anthony Cancer Center recently issued the following announcement.
However, it's important to remember that the holidays aren't necessarily a time for you to take a break from practicing good health practices and staying healthy. In fact, it may even be more crucial for you during this time!
Here are some helpful tips to keep you healthy over the holidays this year:
- Wash Your Hands! The holiday season is also flu season! Be sure to wash your hands as often as possible to prevent the flu's spread and protect yourself from catching it. Use warm water and soap, and wash your hands for at least 20 seconds.
- Flu Shot. Speaking of the flu, make sure you get your flu shot this season! The flu shot is the most effective way of preventing the flu and is recommended for everyone above six months old.
- Eat in Moderation. Holiday foods are delicious but typically not the most nutritious. Be sure to eat fruits and vegetables along with your favorite holiday foods, and limit your portion sizes, especially when eating foods high in fat, salt, and sugar. Pay attention to your body, and stop eating when you're full so you don't overeat. You may even want to find some healthier alternatives to your holiday favorites!
- Drink Water. Don't forget to drink water! The holidays may have you drinking hot cocoa and seasonal spirits, but it's essential to stay hydrated with water, too. If you can, bring a water bottle with you to encourage yourself to drink water.
- Stay Active. In addition to eating well and staying hydrated, try to stay as active as possible. It's recommended that adults are active for at least 2.5 hours per week and that kids and teens are active for one hour a day. It doesn't have to be long or intensive, either: play hide and seek or tag with your younger family members, take a walk after your holiday dinners, or do a quick yoga video.
- Winter Weather. Be mindful of the winter weather. Dress in light layers to stay warm, and don't forget to wear gloves, a hat, and a scarf. Bonus points if they're waterproof so you can stay dry! When driving or walking outside, look out for icy spots so you can be as safe as possible. If traveling, pay attention to the weather forecast, so you're prepared for all conditions.
