St. Anthony Awarded IWD Grant to Support Training of Medical Assistants

Nursee

St Anthony Cancer Center issued the following announcement on November 3.

The program was initiated in 2020, in partnership with Mercy College of Health Sciences, to bring medical assistant training opportunities to the region, as medical assistant degree options are currently not available locally. The Central Iowa Job Training Program grant, aimed at creating sustainable programs that train Iowans with job skills, serves to extend the MA Training Program through the coming year.

The MA Training Program allows Carroll area residents to take part in online courses through Mercy College, while receiving hands-on skills practice at St. Anthony. Those who enroll in the program receive tuition, books, and training materials at no cost, as well as a training stipend and uniform allowance.

Medical Assistants work within the offices of physicians and other health practitioners and are specifically educated to provide a combination of administrative and clinical duties, including taking medical histories and vital signs, explaining treatment procedures, and administering medications. Participants of the St. Anthony MA Training Program will begin in April 2022 and complete the program the following spring. The enrollment deadline is January 31, 2021.

“We are excited at the prospect of providing support for those interested in joining the healthcare workforce,” said Ed Smith, St. Anthony President and CEO. “With medical assistants in high-demand, this training program provides a great opportunity for those interested in starting a career in healthcare.”
