Ed Smith to Retire as CEO of St. Anthony Regional Hospital

Retire

St Anthony Cancer Center issued the following announcement on October 27.

St. Anthony Regional Hospital announced today that President and CEO, Ed Smith, will retire from the organization this coming summer. The Board of Directors of St. Anthony have begun the process to identify Smith’s successor. After ten years as CEO and 34 years of service to the hospital, Smith announced his retirement to the St. Anthony staff and physicians in a personal message.

During Smith’s tenure, St. Anthony has seen a period of significant growth in community healthcare services, employees, physicians, and financial stability. The St. Anthony Clinic expansion, Rehab Services remodel and expansion, Café St. Anthony remodel, and the construction of Garden View Assisted Living and St. Anthony Regional Cancer Center were accomplished. In addition, Pastoral Care Endowment and other endowment funds were established. Staff has increased to 750 full and part-time employees. St. Anthony has also been recognized nationally for quality services as a model rural healthcare provider, as well as being recognized as one of the lowest cost hospitals nationwide.

Smith will continue to represent St. Anthony on organizational boards including the Iowa Hospital Association, American College of Healthcare Executives, Prairie Health Ventures, and Rural Iowa Community Health Alliance.

“After some serious soul searching, I have made the decision to retire next summer. There is never a perfect time to retire, but I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to serve St. Anthony and the people of Carroll and our surrounding area for more than three decades,” said Smith. “Words cannot express my pride in, and love for St. Anthony and the extraordinary people who provide outstanding care to our patients every day.”

“St Anthony Regional Hospital is the regional center for health care in western Iowa and an economic engine for Carroll and west central Iowa.” said Nick Badding, St. Anthony Hospital Board Chairman. “We cannot thank Ed enough for his dedication, vision and service to St. Anthony and our community. The organization is well positioned for St. Anthony’s next chapter.”

Smith has long been an active leader in the community. He served as Mayor of Carroll from 2000-2006. He was named as Citizen of the Year in 2019 and recently was parade marshal in the 2021 Annual Band Day Parade. He continues to serve as a member of Carroll Area Development Corporation.

“Needless to say, he will be missed,” said Badding. “All of us on the Board of Directors are grateful for his contributions.”

Smith will continue to serve in full capacity as President & CEO as the Board of Directors conducts a nationwide search in the coming months.
