Des Moines Area Community College recently issued the following announcement on August 30.

Last Year DMACC was Ranked the Ninth Best Place to Work in Iowa

  • “DMACC is proud to be recognized for the hard work of our faculty and staff, all to the benefit of our students ... ," said DMACC President Rob Denson.
  • DMACC received the highest ranking among all higher education institutes in the state for the second straight year.
  • The respondents to the survey were asked to rate their employers on a variety of criteria, including safety of work environment, competitiveness of compensation, opportunities for advancement and openness to telecommuting.
DMACC, the largest undergraduate college in Iowa, has been named the best place to work in Iowa in 2021, according to a new ranking by Forbes Magazine.

The #1 ranking for 2021 is up from the #9 statewide ranking last year when Forbes released its second annual list of “America's Best Employers by State."

“Iowa has great companies who work together for the betterment of Iowa and their employees," said DMACC President Rob Denson. “DMACC is proud to be recognized for the hard work of our faculty and staff, all to the benefit of our students and the companies who hire them, and the communities where they live."

DMACC Human Resources Executive Director Jenifer Owenson echoed Denson's comments that DMACC is a best place to work because of the dedication and commitment of its employees.

“The DMACC HR Department has a vision of becoming a 'preferred employer,'" Owenson said. “Recognitions, like the one from Forbes, indicate that we are collectively on the path to becoming a successful, diverse, and quality workplace where employees are willing and able to carry out DMACC's mission. We're well recognized because of that reputation. It's enhanced our ability to attract and hire top talent."

The Forbes ranking was divided into 51 lists – one for each of the 50 states, plus the District of Columbia. Forbes and Statista created the ranking based on an independent survey from a sample of more than 80,000 U.S. employees working for companies employing at least 500 people. The surveys were conducted from October 2020 to June 2021.

All the surveys were anonymous, allowing participants to openly share their opinions about safety of work environment, competitiveness of compensation, opportunities for advancement, willingness to recommend their employer to others and the workplace response to COVID.

The number of businesses ranked in each state was dependent on two factors — the number of qualifying employers and the size of the state's workforce — and those with operations in more than one state had the opportunity to be listed multiple times. The final list ranks the 1,328 employers that received the greatest number of recommendations in each of the 50 states, as well as the District of Columbia.

The 2021 Iowa ranking included three higher education institutions in Iowa – DMACC, Iowa State University ranked 9th and the University of Iowa considered the 13th best place to work in Iowa.

DMACC was again the only one among Iowa's 15 community colleges to make the statewide list in 2019, 2020 and in 2021.
