Crawford County Memorial Hospital recently issued the following announcement on August 30.
Crawford County Memorial Hospital (CCMH) has awarded scholarships for two Crawford County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) volunteers to attend classes at Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC). Anthony Pacheco and Joshua Burns, both with the Kiron Fire Department, will receive scholarships to attend classes and become certified Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs). CCMH is awarding a total of $2340 toward the costs of the tuition and books for the classes.
Doug Hollander, Vice President of Clinical Services and Chief Nursing Office at CCMH, said the shortage of available EMTs and Paramedics, both as paid professionals and volunteers, has put a strain on the emergency medicine system across the entire U.S.
“As our population in rural areas of the country continues to age, and with fewer people in our communities, there are not as many volunteers as in the past to help with emergency medical services,” Hollander noted. “I am encouraged we have local partners in our county ambulance and fire crews who are stepping up to the plate to help address this need.”
Hollander said CCMH will continue to pursue a scholarship program for the foreseeable future to help build up a pool of volunteers in the county. He said CCMH will be implementing another round of EMS scholarships in January 2022 for this purpose.
