The first day of classes for Carroll Community School District yielded a 5% absence rate, a figure half of what is required to request online learning.
Superintendent Casey Berlau told the Carroll Times Herald the absent rate, which does not take into account the 20 students who are quarantined at home because of exposure to COVID-19, is not a cause for concern.
“Most of them are related to non-COVID reasons,” Berlau told the publication.
Still, with Carroll County’s two-week positivity rate just a little over 15%, the district will continue to keep tabs on its absent rate. It can ask to shift to virtual learning if the rate is over 10%.
The Carroll Times Herald reported that 90 of 1,689 students were absent, or 5.3%.
"In the past we really only monitored attendance rates daily when we got to flu season,” Berlau told the publication. “Obviously, this year we will watch it closer than in the past.”
