MANNING REGIONAL HEALTHCARE CENTER: Recovery Center at MRHC Recognizes National Recovery Month

Health event recap 01

Manning Regional Healthcare Center recently issued the following announcement.

Throughout the month of September, the Recovery Center at Manning Regional Healthcare Center aims to increase awareness of substance abuse as well as support individuals in their recovery from previous alcohol and substance abuse addictions.

“The pandemic has increased the demand for treatment, and we strive to continue to ensure proper protection from COVID while helping our clients overcome addiction,” said Recovery Center director, Eric Weinkoetz, BA, MPA, CADC. “It has been a challenging year so far, but we are committed to providing the best care for our clients.”

National Recovery Month is a national observance sponsored by SAMHSA, within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The observance raises awareness of mental and substance use disorders, celebrates individuals in long-term recovery, and acknowledges the work of prevention, treatment, and recovery support services. The Recovery Center is taking that to a personal level to ensure everyone knows that ‘no one fights alone.’

National Recovery Month comes during a time in which the Recovery Center has started to see a rise in cases associated with isolation/anxiety/stress from individuals being unable to work.

“With the isolation caused by COVID, we are seeing individuals self-medicating at home. Where in the past, they might have been out socially drinking, now they are home,” Weinkoetz explained. “This increased drinking has resulted in added guilt and shame associated with their drinking, causing more isolation than is required. They continue this cycle until somebody confronts them about their use or they seek medical attention.”

Despite COVID-19, the Recovery Center continues to treat individuals who suffer from substance abuse. Several precautions have been put into place since the Recovery Center re-opened this spring.

“We isolate all new residential clients and test each client for COVID upon admittance. If they are negative, they finish the admit process. If they test positive, we will not admit them, and they are asked to return home until they have a negative test,” said Weinkoetz. “We do not allow physical visits for our clients, but we do provide zoom meetings as well as unrestricted phone calls. We have also stopped outside recreation and have paused going to outside meetings (AA/NA).”

The Recovery Center at MRHC is a 16-bed, co-ed chemical dependency facility located in Manning. For nearly four decades, Recovery Center staff have adapted treatments to meet the most pressing or newly emergent addiction issues. From alcoholism, to the influx of meth to the abuse of prescription painkillers, staff have consistently helped clients take their first step toward healthy, drug and alcohol-free lifestyles.
