City of Gallup NM issued the following announcement on Jun. 3.
CITY OF GALLUP
OFFICE OF THE MAYOR STATE OF NEW MEXICO
Message from Mayor Bonaguidi:
As your mayor, I want the community to know that I stand with George Floyd and his family and friend s in solidarity. Black Lives Matter. My heart is broken for anyone who has suffered the injustices that have unfolded across our nation.
Gallup, like many cities across the nation, is not immune to issues of systemic racism. Yet, Gallup is in the unique position of being a border town to multiple native nations. We are the crossroads of multiculturism, and we aspire to be a model of inclusion. We are working toward being a better neighbor to the Nations that surround us.
There is information about the possibility of organizations or outside individuals arriving in Gallup to allegedly " protect businesses." I am in communication with the Gallup Police Department, and I believe in their efforts to serve and protect our community. Anyone interested in self-policing our community is not welcome.
We are working closely together in the City of Gallup to address the safety of the public. The Gallup Police Department respects first amendment rights and the right to protest peacefully. In addition, they will be offering extra patrols to protect our community from anyone serving to self-police or willfully damage property.
I am proud of the diversity and inclusiveness in our community and support the civil rights of all citizens.
Louie Bonaguidi, Mayor
City of Gallup
