DES MOINES AREA COMMUNITY COLLEGE: High Demand for Amazon Web Services (AWS) Training Offered Through Partnership with Amazon

Des Moines Area Community College issued the following announcement on Jan. 24.

The DMACC Continuing Education program continues to report a high demand for training courses offered through its regional partnership with Amazon, and a third course is scheduled to begin Feb. 11 on the DMACC Ankeny Campus. Jobs that require training in Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud computing have increased by 177 percent over the past four years.

DMACC is currently the only community college in Iowa authorized to provide face-to-face Amazon Web Services (AWS) training courses taught by Amazon-certified instructors. The College’s partnership with Amazon began in 2019.

“At DMACC, we’re proud to work with local business partners to continuously identify and address specific training needs,” said Curt Buhr, Coordinator of Continuing Education at DMACC. “Employee certification in Amazon Web Services (AWS) has emerged as a growing, high-demand need for businesses throughout Central Iowa.”

Prior to DMACC’s partnership with Amazon, Buhr said local employees were required to travel out of state – often to the East or West Coasts – to complete AWS training at higher costs.

“DMACC’s partnership with Amazon has been a great opportunity to meet those needs locally, more affordably and with less disruption to employee schedules, both at work and at home,” Buhr said. “We plan to continue to expand our cost-effective, high-quality offerings related to AWS based on needs within the Central Iowa IT community.”

Register for ‘Security Engineering on AWS’ course by Jan. 31

The next Amazon course at DMACC – “Security Engineering on AWS” – will be held Feb. 11-14 on the DMACC Ankeny Campus. The deadline to register is Jan. 31 (register here), and only limited seats remain available. The four-day, 32-hour course is targeted to security engineers, security architects, security operations and information security professionals. It will focus on how to efficiently use AWS security services to maintain and enhance security in the AWS cloud, with the following course objectives:

  • Assimilate and leverage the AWS shared security responsibility model;
  • Architect and build AWS application infrastructures that are protected against the most common security threats;
  • Protect data at rest and in transit with encryption;
  • Apply security checks and analyses in an automated and reproducible manner;
  • Configure authentication for resources and applications in the AWS Cloud;
  • Gain insight into events by capturing, monitoring, processing and analyzing logs;
  • Identify and mitigate incoming threats against applications and data;
  • Perform security assessments to ensure that common vulnerabilities are patched and that security best practices are applied
