Theatre

Des Moines Area Community College issued the following announcement on Jan. 7.

“Sing, Ebenezer! Songs and Stories from Martin Luther King’s Neighborhood” to be Performed at DMACC’s Ankeny Campus

“Sing, Ebenezer! Songs and Stories from Martin Luther King’s Neighborhood” is an original program created by the Thresholds Music Projects, Inc.  It will be performed at 7 p.m., Tues., Jan. 21st in the Bldg. #6 Auditorium on the DMACC Ankeny Campus.

It features two close friends of the King family.  Dr. Albert Brinson was an assistant minister at Ebenezer Baptist Church with Dr. King and his father before Dr. King was killed. The other is operatic soprano Sherry Dukes, who was encouraged in her singing by the Rev. King, Sr. and went on to sing with the Houston Grand Opera.

They will be joined by Broadway and film performer Roosevelt André Credit and world renowned opera star Simon Estes.

“Sing, Ebenezer! is a powerful evening of first-hand stories from the Civil Rights Movement, life at the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, and the inspiring and impactful music of that legacy,” said Thresholds’ Creative Director Ben Allaway.

A free-will offering will be taken with tax deductible donations benefitting Thresholds Music Projects, Inc., a new nonprofit arts organization in Des Moines. This is Thresholds’ debut event.

Simon Estes, who is host for the evening, will share a song.  The opening program features the Bridges2Harmony Gospel Choir from Des Moines Roosevelt High School, directed by Devon Steve and the DMACC Combined Choirs under the direction of Dr. James Thompson.

“Sing, Ebenezer! Songs and Stories from Martin Luther King’s Neighborhood” is co-sponsored by the Simon Estes School of Fine Arts at DMACC and the Thresholds Music Project, Inc.  The event is being held the day following the observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day.  The audience is invited to a reception to be held following the performance.
