Des Moines Area Community College issued the following announcement on Nov. 11.

Participants encouraged to incorporate ‘The Art of Imagination’ into their designs

DMACC and Court Avenue Brewing Co. have announced a unique design contest in conjunction with ciLive! – also known as Celebrate Innovation Live! – as the week-long speaker series prepares to mark its 11th year. ciLive! 11 will take place March 9-13 at the DMACC West Campus, and is free and open to the public.

Artists are invited to submit their designs for a bottle label that reflects “The Art of Imagination,” which is this year’s ciLive! theme. The contest will include both root beer and beer label categories, and entries will be judged based on quality, originality, creativity and how well the ciLive! 11 theme is incorporated. The winning designs will be featured on custom ciLive! 11 bottles produced by Court Avenue Brewing Co.

“This year’s ciLive! theme focuses on the power of imagination and how it can lead to remarkable innovation and achievement,” said ciLive! founder and DMACC West Campus Provost Dr. Anthony Paustian. “From science and the arts to business and technology, imagination helps lead us forward in so many ways.”

Speakers at ciLive! 11 will include a panel of cast members from the cult-classic film “Napoleon Dynamite,” an Academy Award-winning costume designer, a visual effects supervisor for Marvel Studios, two Discovery Channel program hosts, a NASA project chief and many more.

Contest categories, deadlines and prizes

The root beer label category is open to anyone age 20 or younger, with parental consent required for entrants under the age of 18. Separately, the beer label category is open to anyone age 21 or older.

The deadline to submit artwork files by email to contest@dmacc.edu is 5 p.m. CT on Feb. 7. Submissions sent by mail must be postmarked no later than Feb. 3.

Entries will be reviewed by a panel of five ciLive! 11 judges on the criteria of quality, originality, creativity and incorporation of “The Art of Imagination” theme. The judges will select six finalists in each category (root beer and beer), and these finalists, along with the public, will be invited to attend an official awards ceremony and bottle unveiling on March 7 at Jordan Creek Town Center in West Des Moines. The first, second and third-place winners in each of the two categories will be announced at the unveiling. Ed Wilson, WHO-TV NBC 13 Chief Meteorologist, will serve as the master of ceremonies.

Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place in both the root beer and beer categories. Winners will receive VISA gift cards in the following amounts: First place ($300), second place ($100) and third place ($50). Additionally, each first-place winner will be invited to enjoy a complimentary celebration dinner for themselves and one guest on March 9 at Court Avenue Brewing Co. in Des Moines.
