Fraud Friday: Beware of Scam Emails

Fraud Friday: Beware of Scam Emails

Just because an email appears to come from a reputable company, doesn’t always mean it’s legitimate — especially when they are asking you to call them.

Scammers have gotten much better over the last several years impersonating well-known companies such as a cable company, bank, or mortgage provider. They often ask you to contact them by phone or email and provide personal identifying information such as a password or credit card number. Sometimes they’ll even make it seem like you’re going to be charged for an auto renewal or new order if you don’t contact them.

If you get an email that could be a scam, don’t click on any of the links and don’t call the number they provide. To see if it is in fact legitimate, look up the company’s phone number on their official website and contact them that way.

Keep these things in mind:

– Don’t give your bank account, credit card, or personal information over the phone to someone who contacts you out of the blue– Always notify your financial institution of any questionable phone calls, texts or emails– Never give your password to a stranger on the phone– Make sure your passwords are long, strong, and complex– If you get a phishing email, forward it to the Anti-Phishing Working Group at reportphishing@apwg.org or report it a ReportFraud.ftc.gov
