Qualified recipients in the program are eligible to receive financial assistance in the form of Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards, which then can be used to buy selected groceries. The amount of benefits depends on the net income and household size.
In 2023, the program assisted 727 individuals across 343 households in the county. This compares to the previous year’s 782 recipients in 360 households.
Statewide, Polk County received the largest sum in benefits, with $101,313,004 distributed among 50,042 recipients across 24,448 households in 2023. Scott County came in second, granting $42,703,578 to 20,459 people living in 10,326 households.
Guthrie County ranked 69th in Iowa.
In total, SNAP granted $524,184,590 among counties in the state during 2023.
