City of Carroll council members recently discussed a few issues with one of the city’s wells.
The city started a rehabilitation program for the city well 19. The well was constructed back in 2017 and in October of 2022, the public works department launched a rehabilitation program because the output of the well had dropped significantly.
“The post-treatment inspection of well 19 indicated that there is some material that appears to be still plugging the screen and some of the gravel pack in the well. That post-treatment inspection was reviewed by Water Systems Engineering, the company that originally proposed the rehabilitation protocol,” Carroll Director of Public Works Randall Krauel said at the Dec. 12 city council meeting. “They have recommended an additional treatment protocol to try to rid the well of that blockage that’s in it.”
Following the rehabilitation project, well #19’s output increased by 30% from 4.4 to 5.7 gallons per minute per foot. Compared to the eight other potable wells in the city which have between 6-22.3 gallons per minute per foot, the well is still underperforming. The 6-gallon yield well is also currently under rehabilitation, and that project is showing much better results than well 19.
The city originally spent $44,000 on the rehabilitation program for this well, although this didn’t include the fixing of the pump and motor in the well. Those additional repair costs and the extra cost of the second rehabilitation protocol brings the cost for well 19 to just over $67,000.
Following the discussion, the council voted to approve the additional cost for the project.
